The City of Edmonton (Canada) and the City of Vitoria-Gasteiz (Spain) are working together as part of the 2015-2016 EU-Canada Municipal Cooperation on Urban Policy. This cooperation is one of many involved in the World Cities Project, an initiative of the European Union managed by the Directorate General for Regional and Urban Policy. The objective of the World Cities Project is to encourage the exchange of information and good practices on regional and urban development. In particular, the EU-Canada Cooperation brings cities together to discuss and collaborate on actions connected to the following themes: Resilience and Adaptation, Ecosystem Services, and Low-Carbon Development.
Carlos Garbisu from our group participates in this initiative, especially in those aspects related to the recovery of brownfields, biodiversity and ecosystem services. Among other aspects, Carlos Garbisu is helping to promote opportunities for students or staff exchange between the University of Alberta and the University of the Basque Country, within the field of sustainability research.
