Since 2004, Carlos Garbisu has been a collaborator of the UNESCO Chair on Sustainable Development and Environmental Education of the University of the Basque Country (UPV/EHU). The Chair has set itself the challenge to step up research and specialized studies on Sustainability and Environmental Education from an interdisciplinary perspective, encompassing natural and social sciences. The research projects supported by the Chair are aimed at understanding and solving problems related to sustainable development in the Basque Country and particularly in the Urdaibai Biosphere Reserve, the territory of which it is hoped will serve as an area for testing and demonstrating experiments.
Today´s meeting has been focused on the organization of the next postgraduate degree “Expert in Environment and Sustainability” imparted at the UPV/EHU. Besides, a fruitful debate on the consequences of the recent Sustainable Development Goals established by the United Nations (see Resolution adopted by the General Assembly on 25 September 2015) for 2030 has taken place during the meeting. The 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development is a plan of action for people, planet and prosperity, that seeks to strengthen universal peace in larger freedom. The Agenda is composed of 17 Sustainable Development Goals and 169 Targets, demonstrating the scale and ambition of this new universal Agenda (the idea is to build on the Millennium Development Goals and complete what they did not achieve). The Goals and Targets will stimulate action over the next 15 years in areas of critical importance for humanity and the planet.
